Weekly Watch- 8/3

Monday Must: 6 Underground- Ryan Reynolds and Michael Bay...What else could you need for the start of the week? 6 Underground delivers not only your daily dose of high octane impossible action sequences mixed with the humor of Ryan Reynolds, but it is also one of the best Netflix original movies to date, yes better than The Old Guard and Extraction. If any of my readers have seen Extraction, if you recall that feeling from the film's 13 minute one take fight scene, times that by ten and that is 6 Underground in a nutshell. Reynolds stars as Gray aka One who leads a team of former soldiers and spies that fake their deaths to hunt down a deadly general and leader from Central Asia that causing nothing but horror in his country. I know to some Michael Bay does not have the greatest track record of his films, however to me he is on the best action directors of all time. The film is shot beautifully across multiple countries with amazing stunts and action sequences that leave your jaw-dropping. The movie has you hooked in the beginning with an incredible car chase, that leaves you wondering what could come next, and trust me your mind will be blown. (Netflix)

Terrible Tuesday: Wild Hogs- What happens when four old school Hollywood actors get together to make a comedy about four men in their 50s that all experience a mid-life crisis that causes them to head out for the West Coast on motorcycles, normally nothing, but according to this film so much along the ride. Starring Tim Allen, John Travolta, William H. Macy, and Martin Lawrence, and I know what your probably thinking, how on Earth does this film already exist? This movie was basically Grown Ups before Adam Sandler wrote that film instead on motorcycles. The chemistry among the actors are all over the place, the story is quite bizarre, the editing is just is all over the place. Yet sadly, you never want to turn it off, and surprisingly, you constantly watch it whenever it is on TV. One moment that always stands out when the four Wild Hogs meets a real biker gang lead by Ray Liotta, yes the Ray Liotta from Goodfella, which turns the movie into a weirdly unexpected direction. Overall, Wild Hogs is a bumpy ride from start to finish, it is the definition of a car-wreck, or even a motorcycle wreck, that you cannot turn away from, and sit their in awe while you watch. (HBO MAX)

Women Crush Wednesday: Ready Or Not- Our Women Crush Wednesday goes to the amazing performance given by Samara Weaving in one of the most underrated mystery/horror films of 2019. Imagine it is your wedding day, and you go to your In-Laws house for the wedding reception, and all of a sudden, you are being pulled into a game room. The game you must play is Hide and Seek, however their is a deadly twist that leaves shocked throughout the entire film. Weaving is able to play more than damsel in distress throughout the film, and constantly makes smart decisions that always leaves you rooting for her until the very end. The mystery and the horror of the film work perfectly, not so much to make it seem like a Jordan Peele or Tarantino type film, enough where directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillet allow it to feel like their own film. The ending as well, I must point out with no spoilers, was one of the best twists in the last few years in Cinema. This movie is scary, mysterious, hilarious, and is overall a wild ride that will not disappoint all thanks to Weaving and her brilliant performance that will make her an A-Lister in no time. (HBO MAX)

Throwback Thursday: Django Unchained- Where do I begin with this classic Quentin Tarantino western action film. Should I begin with the overall perfect story of this film from beginning to end of Jamie Foxx starring as Django a former slave turned bounty hunter? Should I start with the perfect script written by Tarantino, ultimately earning him his second Oscar, also making it his best film to date? Should I start with the all-star cast brought to the this film from Foxx, to Christoph Waltz earning him a Oscar, to Leonardo DiCaprio who honestly gave his best performance to date and should have been nominated for an Academy Award, and to finally Samuel L. Jackson playing Leo's twisted butler? Or should I start with Tarantino providing one of the great western films of all time that still holds up being eight years, and provides a sense of bravery, courage, and excitement that only a man like Tarantino could put on screen. Honestly, any of those talking points would be sufficient, it is now up to you to decide. (Netflix)

Friday Feels: La La Land- Now I present to you the 2016 Academy Award for Best Picture La La... oh wait, oh wait their has been a mistake...Anyways La La Land gives its audience a love letter to the old golden age of Hollywood musicals, written and directed by one of the youngest and best directors of this generation, Damien Chazelle. While the film is a constant tear jerker, the best moment and one of the saddest moments in cinema history with its ending dance sequence. The musical itself is brilliant, and we see progressively how it all leads to the last shot of the film, where you need a tissue box, and you find yourself standing and clapping for the film, no matter where you are watching it. Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone give outstanding performances that allow you to both cheer and jeer at the characters as you become invested into the story. For anyone who is a fan of old golden age musicals such as Singing in the Rain, An American in Paris, and even The Wizard of Oz, this movie is right up your alley and will help you understand why it was Best Picture for thirty seconds. (HBO MAX)

Cinema Weekend: Palm Springs- Close out the week with one of the hottest new Hulu original films Palm Springs. Close out the week with one of the hottest new Hulu original films Palm Springs. Now I know what you are thinking, why did I just type out the same sentence twice? Well this was no accident, the same way Andy Samberg and Cristin Milioti find themselves reliving the same day over and over again at a wedding in a resort in Palm Springs, CA. What is great about this film is it not just a carbon copy of films such as Groundhog Day and Edge of Tomorrow. It has its own identity that plays to the strengths of the film including the chemistry between Samberg and Milioti who both give outstanding performances as two people trapped inside this loop with nothing else to do and it simply does not take itself serious to provide a fun and goofy take on what happens at a wedding you are constantly stuck inside of and finding a great way to deal with problems while looking forward into whatever the future has in store for the two characters. For anyone a fan of The Lonely Island, this movie is right up your alley, and will lead you wanting to watch on multiple loops. (Hulu)
