A Quiet Place Part II Review- A Sequel That is Both…Shhhh

I need to be honest with you all before you read this review, however if you are familiar with me this is just simply old news. I was not a fan of the first installment of A Quiet Place. It is just personal reasons, I know I am probably going to receive a ton of heat for it, yet I am not sorry I just was not on board with the film. So walking into the theater for Part II I had very low expectations. I know what your thinking “why see the sequel then”? Because I am curious and needs to know what happens next in this world created by John Krasinski. Part II takes places immediately after the events of the first film when Evelyn (Emily Blunt), Regan (Millicent Simmonds), Marcus (Noah Jupe), and the newborn figure out a way to destroy the aliens using Regan’s hearing aids. After they leave their barn they find Emmett, a former friend played by Cillian Murphy who attempts to help them yet is scared of what is outside his bunker. Will they find new shelter or more people to save knowing there is a way to defeat the aliens? Time is not on their side and is running out fast before they are the next victims. To much of my own surprise, I actually enjoyed this sequel. My biggest problem with Part 1 I guess you can say is the lack of the surrounding world around the main family that was teased throughout yet never put into motion, and now we finally can see this world. As well as the fact of the matter of why the family did not live by the waterfall knowing the aliens cannot hear when water is running. But anyways, we were able to see the expanding world of how the aliens affected others more so than just one family. And this is no disrespect to Emily Blunt or John Krasinski who have good performances in the first film, I just wanted more and that is what Part II was able to provide more. The story was definitely more structured with their storylines and where they wanted characters to be, rather than have it be this giant free for all of escaping aliens. Come to think of it definitely added more Science Fiction/Mystery/thriller elements rather being a pure horror film that helps bring the story together. One of the best parts of this new film was Cillian Murphy. His addition added new layers and conflicts that overall helped the story work. His layers and acting brings you closer to the action at hand per scene and ultimately you find yourself rooting for him at every moment. It does stink (Spoiler for Part 1) his character was not able to work with Krasinski’s character more, however he was the right addition for the sequel. The sound design once again for this film was truly outstanding. The sound in scenes and not afraid to say lack of sound in some adds this character to the film that brings amazing perspectives to each scene that truly bring you to the edge of your seat. The sound even brings out the best of performances of some characters including Regan, who if you are not aware is deaf, to show you more important senses to her scenes and feel one with her character. If you are able to see this film in IMAX, the sound will make a difference and I guarantee you will be able to not only hear a difference vs a regular theater but also feel immersed with the film. With all this being said about story and sound, my one biggest problem walking out of the theater was Evelyn’s storyline, it felt very forced and out of place compared to everything else going on. Safe to say it was the boring parts of a rather exciting story going on outside her character. Overall, A Quiet Place Part II is a great addition to a world that is designed to be bigger with wonderful direction and a bright future ahead, here’s hopping we see Part III. Lastly once again, I urge all of you to experience this on the big screen whether it is IMAX or your local theater, please see this film the right way it was intended to be seen. It works so well in theaters that once again when you a hear a noise next to you, you will be going Shhhh.
