Weekly Watch- 8/10

Updated: Aug 31, 2020

Monday Must: Hot Rod- Start the week off with some laughs and some ultimate daredevil tricks from one of the most underrated comedies of the 2000s. In one of the first films developed by the members of the comedy band The Lonely Island including Andy Samberg, who stars in the film as amateur Daredevil Rod Kimble. While trying to be a professional stuntman, Rod is constantly attempting to gain the respect from his stepfather Frank. The film is played with silly laughs, an amazing cast from Samberg to Ian McShane to fellow Lonely Island member Jorma Taccone to Bill Hader, the chemistry all around is silly and perfect. The Lonely Island always remain consistent in terms of goofiness and silliness across their films from Popstar to the recent Palm Springs, Hot Rod continues to be a special film that flies under the radar, just as the rest of their films. For anyone who is a fan of goofy laughs, amazing soundtracks, and overall a great time, Hot Rod is the perfect film for you. (Hulu)

Terrible Tuesday: Spider-Man 3- Right off the bat I must admit, this film is not terrible, however I would not have put it in this category without a specific reason. As a standalone film, its not awful, it is entertaining and simply watchable. When being compared to the rest of the Sam Raimi Spider-Man Trilogy, especially following Spider-Man 2, which is arguably one of the best superhero films of all time, it is beyond awful and cringes on so many levels. The cringes of the film make it watchable in some ways, from the famous dancing scene, the weird EMO plot elements of Peter Parker, the uneven amount of villains that simply make no sense, and my personal favorite the rushed story line of Venom. The best words overall to describe the film is a "Let-Down". The excitement about this film was unbelievable, it was Endgame before Endgame was even an idea, and the final result was simply bizarre. Spider-Man 3 is a movie that no one should ever miss and watched as well remembered for generations to come. (Hulu/Prime)

Women Crush Wednesday: Atomic Blonde- We continue the week with another underrated gem with the amazing Charlize Theron in my opinion her best film to date, as the bad-ass MI6 agent Lorraine Broughton, aka the Atomic Blonde. This film is one the most perfect action films in the history of the genre. It has a great mix of Jason Bourne meets James Bond meets Kingsman meets mystery meets Cold War meets Man From UNCLE style action thriller. Theron simply kicks ass in this film in all the right ways. She is constantly one step ahead of everyone through her interrogation to her fighting scenes, Theron steals the show. Not to mention her chemistry with fellow actors John Goodman and James McAvoy, graphic novel based movie is simply awesome. Director David Leitch, director of Deadpool 2 and Hobbs and Shaw, choreographs the film to give it this gritty action film that feels both modern and 80s. The future of this film is beyond bright and rightfully so, Lorraine is one not to mess with when crossing her path. (Buy/Rent Youtube, Amazon)

Throwback Thursday: Inception- Are you home stuck right now waiting for the theaters to reopen as well as waiting for the release of director Christopher Nolan's newest thriller Tenet, well do I have a throwback film for you. How can the director of The Dark Knight top his own filmography, well I can tell you how, with a film such as Inception. This film remains to be my all time favorite film since I have first seen it in theaters 10 years ago. With a perfect cast ranging from Leo DiCaprio, Tom Hardy, Joseph Gordon Levitt, Ellen Page, and Michael Caine, we experience a chemistry unlike any other as a group of thieves and architects who go inside the dreams of their targets to steal and plant information into their mind. The practical effects of this film are unlike any other film to date, and even watching now you are always finding something new in the film you missed at its first screening. Inception is an eye-popping sci-fiction thriller that stills dares you to dream. After watching this film, you will be screaming for the release of Tenet. (Prime)

Friday Feels: Toy Story 3- Grab your tissue box and get ready to relieve the moment your childhood came to an end with the Pixar Best Picture Nominee sequel to Toy Story. The film simply brings all the feels to your life, some happy and some sad, but overall that childhood nostalgia that we can all use in this day in age. Andy has grown up and our favorite Toy gang do not know what is in store for their future. Some believe it is the attic, some believe the trash, and some are just uncertain. Woody and Buzz do their best to keep the composure of their fellow toys in arms. This leads to a daycare, and more importantly a daycare taken over by an evil stuffed animal bear who smells of strawberries. Toy Story 3 is one of the best animated films of all time with great voice work from Tom Hanks and Tim Allen, who help close the door for one generation, and open up the door for the next generation with nothing but a bright future. We all need this type of film right about now that helps us get through this craziness together. (Disney +).

Cinema Weekend: An American Pickle- Close the weekend with Canadian comedian, writer, and producer Seth Rogen in his newest film, where he plays not only one role but...two roles. Rogen plays Herschel Greenbaum, a Eastern European Immigrant who moves to New York City in 1919 and works at a pickle factory. One day at work he falls into a vat of pickles that cause him to freeze, thus waking up in present day 2019 Brooklyn. Herschel meets his only descendant Ben, who helps him adjust and live in a world he has no knowledge off. This film is not necessarily a comedy, its more of a drama with funny moments. It kinda feels almost in some scenes, with amazing scenery, a Wes Anderson meets Seth Rogen type drama. Rogen is brilliant as both Herschel and Ben, the adjustments to the world is not overbearing to point where everything is a joke, it is just enough to not feel dragged on. At an hour and a half, the runtime provides enough laughs and tears to bring one of the most original but serious Seth Rogen films to date. (HBO MAX)
