Weekly Watch- 7/27

Monday Must: The Old Guard- Start the week off strong and jump into this action packed Netflix original film with Charlize Theron. Coming off the strength and views of Extraction, Netflix is diving in deep with the action film genre. The Old Guard, based off the comic book of the same name, tells the story of a group of warriors that have been around since the beginning of time that have the ability to heal after dying. Throughout their history they are constantly saving people around the globe, until present day they are being hunted by an evil company trying to figure out how they stay alive. Theron gives an all-star performance, in the ways of Atomic Blonde, and that makes her both mysterious and daring. The film starts out a little slow in the beginning, however is overall a great summer blockbuster popcorn film. (Netflix)

Terrible Tuesday: Baywatch (2017)- The Rock, Zac Efron, Abs, the beach, what more could you possibly expect from this reboot film of the old 80s show. Lets be honest with ourselves, you really would not expect much from this film would you. Let me tell you something you would be correct. While this film is overall just fun to watch, it is so disappointing with this all star cast of Dwayne Johnson and Zac Efron, and in some parts absolutely hard to watch. Yet this film in some ways reminds me of car crash, it is simply just to hard to look away from. Certainly not the worst film of The Rock's filmography, and definitely nowhere near the best. His chemistry between Efron and himself was quite funny at times, sadly the whole film in better terms could have been so much funnier. (Rent/Buy Amazon/Youtube)

Woman Crush Wednesday: Wonder Woman (2017)- In one of the better DCEU films, up until the CGI filled third act, Gal Gadot's Wonder Woman is one of the better comic book film adaptions in the 2010s and one of the top tier DC films in the last years. After her introduction to the big screen in Batman V Superman, we see an origin story about Princess Diana and her training in the Amazons, her meeting of Steve Trevor played by the brilliant Chris Pine, and her introduction to world around her, in this setting World War I. Wonder Woman is not only a great WWI film, but overall a great film in general, with a performance by Gadot that brings life into this character that we can constantly root for and inspire us in the real world. (HBO MAX)

Throwback Thursday: The Social Network- Where do I begin with this throwback of a film. Not only is it one of the best films of the 2010s in general, but it is also of the best and most important films of all time. For those not familar with the film, Jesse Eisenberg stars as Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, telling the story of Harvard undergrad to becoming of the most controversial billionaire of all time. The acting from Eisenberg to Andrew Garfield to Justin Timberlake to Armie Hammer with an amazing Oscar winning script from Aaron Sorkin gives performances that have us debate to this day on who to root for in the company and has you feel all the pain and triumph Facebook goes through to find its way to the top. Some may not agree, but to me The Social Network is a overall perfect film. (Netflix)

Friday Feels: Onward- From Disney and Pixar, comes their most recent film that sadly not many were able to see in theaters due to the pandemic, yet Disney provided an incredible opportunity to watch it exclusively on Disney Plus. If the world was able to attend the theaters, I think this Pixar film would be talked about as one of the best Pixar films of all time. It is original, funny, smart, and quite in your feelings with amazing work from Chris Pratt and Tom Holland as they star as two elves who go on a quest to meet their father with a magical staff in a world where mythology is the norm that contain unicorns, fairies, and even centaurs. One of the best films of 2020, and one of the most beautiful animated movies to come along in the recent years. Bring your tissue boxes. (Disney Plus)

Cinema Weekend: Good Time- Before their work with Uncut Gems, the Safdie Brothers directed one of the most unappreciated films of all time known Good Time. It is really hard to describe this film without spoiling it, but the one word I can genuinely give you is: insane. If you have seen Uncut Gems then you know exactly what you are in for when it comes to a Safdie Brothers Film, if you are not familiar with Uncut Gems then you are in for a wild ride. Robert Pattinson breaks away from the mess of the Twilight world as a serious actor and gives an unrecognizable performance that I still do not know how he was not nominated for an Oscar for to this day or frankly how this film went unnoticed. Also, I guarantee you understand why he was chosen as the new Batman after watching this film. It is constantly in your face, on the edge of your seat, and heart pounding, when the credits roll you will feel as if you survived an intense roller coaster. The realism and sound add layers to the film that truly make it remarkable. A must see for all that should receive the proper love it deserves. (Netflix)
