Top 10 Films of 2019

Updated: Apr 14, 2020

These are the top ten films of the year 2019, not based off reviews from critics or fans or anything, these are my personal opinions, I know some might disagree with this list and that is awesome, I encourage all to give me their opinions and their thoughts. This year brought us originality, cheers, random feuds between directors and studios, and endings to our favorite characters we have grown up to love throughout our lives, Without further ado...Here is the top ten films of 2019!

10. The Upside- I know right off the bat this is going to be a controversial pick, but the year started off right with the first drama acted by comedian Kevin Hart. The film tells the story of friendship, getting out of one's comfort zones, figuring out how to accomplish our goals in life despite the worlds we live in or come from. The story is brought to life by Bryan Cranston and Kevin Hart that bring a chemistry to the screen that motivates you to be yourself and always remember the good times in life no matter what is thrown at us. It is exciting to see what else Kevin Hart has in store for his career in the world of drama, hopefully it leads to the Academy Award.

9. The Irishman- DeNiro, Pesci, Pacino, and Scorsese come together in this latest Netflix gangster drama to take down the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But in all seriousness, the three greatest actors, especially in the gangster genre, and one of the greatest directors of all time, create a world of family and crime that is both surprising and intriguing to see unfold to life on the screen. The deaging of the actors certainly was a bit off, yet it did make the film more personal as we see time move on and it almost feels as if we are living their lives and are apart of their worlds. The acting alone of the film felt old-school and even scary in some aspects especially with the power these gentleman have from their respected careers.

8. John Wick: Chapter 3- Parabellum- I am out to prove to the world that the John Wick franchise is one of the greatest action franchises of all time. Keanu Reeves is still being hunted by every known assassin in the world and yet fines a way to always be the strongest and smartest guy in the room. This film stands out among its last two films to create an identity of it itself that makes it one of the greatest action films of the decade and even one of all time. The fight scenes and gun battles are so well choreographed that it feels realistic and separate from what one sees in a video game. Lastly, Keanu is the goat.

7. Avengers: Endgame- Avengers...Assemble, that was certainly a highlight of my life to finally hear on the big screen. Endgame brought a more than satisfying conclusion to the stories of our favorite on screen superheroes. The final battle scene between our heroes and Thanos is certainly one to remember for the ages, both visually and even emotionally as we witness this time heist to save the world. I do not remember the last time I experienced all these ranges of emotions at the movie theater, and looking forward to the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

6. Us- Jordan Peele's first horror flick, Get Out, was a cinematic masterpiece and one of the most original and perfect horror flicks to date, so naturally his sophomore had high expectations and thankfully he once again did not disappoint. In this social case of Man Vs Himself, we are able to see how the most fearful thing in life is ourselves both physically and mentally. The twist in the end made the film shocking and ultimately the best horror flick of the year, on top of the best performances of the year from Lupita Nyong'O.

5. Knives Out- It's Bond...James Bond, nope it is actually Benoit Blanc, or as I like to call him the American Inspector Poirot portrayed by James Bond himself Daniel Craig in this brilliantly created by Rian Johnson, yes the one who directed The Last Jedi but that is either near or there. Johnson writes this outstanding original murder mystery film with an all star cast that leaves you wondering who committed the crime. The scenery, script, acting, and cinematography of this film are captured breathtakingly by Johnson and definitely a huge step in making more original and fun films. Hopefully with the success of this film Johnson makes a sequel for our new private investigator Blanc.

4. Ford V Ferrari- No this is not a sequel to Batman V Superman or a new Fast and Furious, in fact it is much better than those films, well actually Batman is in this film, but never mind that now. Ford V Ferrari was one of the most fun and interesting biopics of the year. Matt Damon and Christian Bale provide an amazing on screen chemistry with one another as if they have been friends for numerous years, and even give there career best performances. The racing sequences were stunning and on the edge of your seat, and makes you appreciate the history behind the famous car companies.

3. Uncut Gems- Without a doubt the most intense, stressful, and chaotic film of the year. Sandler brings a career best performance to the table as Howard, a man who seem to just cannot win in life. The Safdie Brothers certainly gained a new fan when watching this film, and enjoyed the sound, cinematography, acting, and even the soundtrack of the film play huge roles as separate 3rd person narrators who move the story forward and bring you into a gritty world of diamonds and gambling.

2. Joker- What can I say about Joker that has not been said already. This movie was without a doubt the most important film of the year, that constantly keeps you guessing about the effects of reality. Joker is not your average superhero or antihero movie brought to life on the big screen. It is dark, violent, crazy, and even somewhat scary as you see the true effects of mental illness take over the drive of a man. Phoenix will win every award possible in the next coming weeks as a role that will never be forgotten.

and finally...

1. Once Upon a Time...In Hollywood- Leo, Brad, Margot, and Quentin together at last for the years best film that tells a fairy tale of the life in 1969 Hollywood, California. Leo and Brad are so fun to watch on screen together, especially Pitt who I am sure will every award possible as Cliff Booth, the stunt double for Leo's Rick Dalton, new movie characters that will be go down in history as ultimate pieces of cinematic history. The craft and beauty Mr. Tarantino brings onto the screen shows the audience how much he truly appreciates this moment and culture of American History, and brings to life a fairy tale that is certainly one for the ages.

2019 was year of exciting moments in the world of cinema, and it is exciting to see what 2020 brings us!
