The Lovebirds Review- Fun Yet Unoriginal Version Of "Date Night" Saved By Nanjiani & Rae

As the movie theaters remained close and constant delays rain on the parade for big Hollywood productions, some films have found success through other streaming markets or special video on demand services. While this sadly hurts the movie going experience that we all look forward when we go out to the cinemas, some films that have skipped the theatrical have some success during this time of need during quarantine. One of these films that have chosen to forgo theaters and go straight to the little known streaming service "Netflix" is the newest romantic comedy The Lovebirds. Starring comedians Issae Rae from HBO's Insecure and Kumail Nanjiani from Stuber and the upcoming MCU film Eternals as Leilani and Jibran a couple from New Orleans going on four years in their relationship. What at first seems as if it is a perfect relationship, we noticed now the honeymoon phase is over and their relationship is not as perfect as it seemed. While going to a dinner party and fighting over silly nonsense, they find themselves in a car crash with someone on a bicycle who is later chased by a "Cop" who hijacks Jibran and Leilani's car to go after the man. The "cop" significantly hurts the person on the bike and fleas the scene, thus making it seem it was Leilani and Jibrans doing to the passing bystanders and the police, so naturally, they run. Following numerous clues and running into many unknown enemies along the way, they try to find a way to both solve the mystery of who hijacked their car, who is the man he hit, and where to properly avoid the police. This movie overall is enjoyable and watchable. It does exactly what it needs to do during this time of quarantine, provide audiences something new to watch on Netflix that is not "Tiger King" or "The Office". The writers and directors definitely do a good job on the genre of a romantic comedy meets action thriller. However with that being said, it feels way too much like the 2010 film "Date Night". If you are not familiar with this film, it stars Steve Carrell and Tina Fey whose date night goes crazy when they are mistaken for another couple. If you are familar with this film, then you can pretty much figure out the plot and ending of "The Lovebirds". While thankfully its not a shot for shot remake, some scenes just do not feel fresh and almost as a been there done that approach that seems all to familiar. The film does add new points and characteristics to Leilani and Jibran's relationship that makes it out stand out among other films. With this being said, this goes to the credit of Issa Rae and Kumail Nanjiani, whose performances make the film fun and watchable. Their chemistry between each other is instant and so much fun. They bounce off each other perfectly that adds a layer to film that helps you root for them along their journey. You can tell they improvise off each other which makes the next punchline in the joke hilarious. I hope they continue to do films together because they are a fun duo. While the plot is certainly not original, the film is fun and certainly watchable for a good date night, I certainly wish we were able to have watched this in theaters it definitely would have been a good time to see on the big screen and watch along with other audience members.
