Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker Review- Star Wars Rises Post Last Jedi for Epic and Satisfying End

42 years ago, George Lucas gave the world the first of 9 episodes of the Skywalker Saga in the Star Wars franchise. Little did anyone truly know this film would have some of the biggest impact in cinema history for generations to come. Now, here we are in 2019 witnessing the last episode in this saga ending those generations of films and stories we have grew up watching, reading, playing video games, and even creating our own stories with the characters we have grown up to love and appreciate throughout the last few years. The story of The Rise of Skywalker picks up around a year after the events of The Last Jedi where the surviving resistance lead by Princess Lela begins their march to finally put an end to Kylo Ren and the mysterious First Order. Along the way we witness the return of the fallen Emperor Palpatine, who we all know is thought to be dead since Return of the Jedi. Our heroes Rey, Poe, Finn, BB-8, and even C-3PO must now travel across the galaxy through various planets to find the keys needed to defeat the Sith and bring balance to the force once and for all. Along the way we meet new characters, see familiar faces, and are given answers to various questions regarding the some specific characters and events from throughout the Skywalker Saga. Providing the fans both a glamorous third act that will be talked about for decades to come for the next generations of Star Wars fans. I was very pleased with this movie both with story and effects. As I constantly been mentioning, I was pleased with the answers to questions we have been asking since episode 7, obviously I will not spoil the contents of the film, but I will mention how I felt this sense of relief throughout the film as the story continued on, especially with these well written characters who have grown into legends. All leading to this amazing third act that was everything I wanted to be seen in a Star Wars film since Revenge of the Sith. The visuals for this film were truly breathtaking. The franchise seemed to fly away from the CGI mess that was used throughout its creatures and planets in episode 8 to bring a more practical effect as seen in The Force Awakens. I loved director J.J. Abrams approach to making this film where you can see the caution of not being to over the top, but rather just right in use of fantastic CGI. One specific lightsaber battle between Kylo and Rey was visually stunning, definitely one of the best duels over the last three movies. However in my opinion, the prequel films lightsaber battles are top tier and still some of the most amazing action sequences. Some things I did not appreciate so much in the film was at the end of the day, after 2 and a half hours, the film still never managed to create a new identity that separates itself from basically being a rehashing of other films. However it was not as bad as how episode 7 was basically a retelling of A New Hope. But still in the end of the day it is a Star Wars film and my expectations and certainly most fans agree that this was still a top tier. Also with many sagas and long term franchises ending, the Disney formula seemed to kick in a bit throughout the film where they needed to answer some questions quickly without any explanations like the most recent Avengers, and at some moments I felt like I was watching the same formula used when Marvel made Endgame. In terms of rankings of the Skywalker Saga, I put this in top 3, my personal favorite to this day is Revenge of the Sith, then naturally the original Star Wars, then right after I would put the new film in 3rd place. The Skywalker Saga has come to a so called conclusion that is both meaningful and pleasing.
