Little Women (2019) Review- These Women Bring Excellence To The Film From Script & Performances

I have to admit before I get into this review, I have not read the 1868 novel this movie is based off, had never seen 1994 adaption with Christian Bale and Winona Ryder, and sadly have not seen director Greta Gerwig's 2017 "Lady Bird". All of these not by the matter of choice more or less from lack of opportunity, with that being said when the trailer for this film came out and cast list I was quite excited to see this adaption of "Little Women". From the trailer alone it seemed faithful from its original material, as well something I know would be amazing Oscar material. After watching this film, it was safe to say that the entire cast and Greta Gerwig herself did not disappoint. For those unfamiliar with the plot of this film, the story tells at the tale of the four March sister, Jo played by Saoirse Ronan, Amy played by Florence Pugh, Meg played by Emma Watson, and Beth played by Eliza Scanlen set in the mid 19th century in Concord, Massachusetts. The story is told through the point of view of Jo as she travels back to her hometown from New York to see her sister Beth who is going through a deadly illness. Throughout her journey we see the lives of the sisters grow up in front of our eyes from their school-days to finding love and making friends, including Jo's friend Laurie played by Timothee Chalamat, who clearly loves Jo, who is not interested in him whatsoever, yet they continue along an amazing friendship. As we watch the sisters grow when the story jumps back and forth to see how the sisters end up in the points they are in their lives, including Jo writing her novel, how Amy made it to Paris, Meg marrying a school teacher, and how Beth became ill, all while being raised by their mother while their father is off fighting in the Civil War. We see the happy moments, the sad moments, and the moments that bring the girls close together, and almost make you think you are part of the March family. The film all around was truly breathtaking and amazing to watch, especially on screen. From the acting to costumes to the production design to script, the movie goes all in to put in the lives of the March. All the actors and actresses give amazing performances especially Pugh and Ronan in certain scenes where Gerwig writes amazing monologues that transcend the picture when talking to the audience about their lives and futures. Gerwig allows captures the essence of family throughout the film with small mannerisms and acts the girls do throughout the film the show the fun they have on screen in this small little home. The costume design was excellent throughout all locations of where the film takes place which brings both and homelike feel and appropriate setting for the time in which the story takes place. iOverall, Little Women was not a depressing story rather a great feel good story about family that brought to life by the brillance Gerwig and amazing acting abilities of Ronan, Pugh, Watson, and Scanlen that has you laughing, crying, cheering, and even thinking.
