IT Chapter Two Review- The Only Thing Scary About This Film is the Script

2017 provided audiences with one of the biggest surprise hits of the year, and a top 5 horror movie of the decade with IT Chapter One, also known simply as IT. The first film, based off the acclaimed Stephen King novel from 1986, follows the story of seven kids that encounter a horrific experience with a terrifying clown known as Pennywise. While normally one book is only made into one film, this 1,138 page book was ultimately made into two films to accommodate for the constant times we as the audience experience between the kids going from kids to adults. While the first films focuses directly on the kids, Chapter Two switches to 27 years from 1989 to 2016 as we watch the kids of the Loser Club grow right in front of our eyes into adults with jobs, marriages, and a life beyond their hometown of Derry. While they think they might have defeated the dancing clown back in 1989, they are called upon again by one of the Losers, Mike, to defeat the horror once and for all. Throughout the film we given glimpses on how the clown strikes fear into the kids/adults both physically and mentally. However not is the clown striking fear into our characters, he is striking the fear of a bad movie on our hands into the audience. The first film provided a sense of heart into their characters alongside an assortment of fear that seemingly is hard to replicate onto the screen again. The horrors of this film, while done by a once again amazing job as Pennywise from Bill Skarsgard, are a CGI mess that is both over-the-top and somewhat annoying as they lead up into a jump scare that ultimately serves to become nothing, and then moved onto a silly joke. Normally a scene such as these are not to bad, but given a 2 hour and 49 minute runtime, these moments tend to drag out. The first act only of this could have shaved off 20 minutes of the film, providing pointless actions and characters that seem to have no connection to the final outcome of the film. While it seems there are no good points to this film, there are actually some, few, not as much, probably, maybe two good things, that this film managed to make it flow. First and foremost the acting, with an all-star cast of adult actors from Jessica Chastain to James McAvoy, and even SNL Alum Bill Hader, they all somehow manage to take the contents of a weak script and act incredibly to make the film somewhat decent enough to save me from walking out of the screening. Bill Hader alone, who to me was the best casting choice in the film, provided a heart and a reason to root for someone. The next enjoyable moments of the film were a few horror scenes, that I will not mention specifically due to spoilers, that included an all out performance from Skarsgard that was both awesome and creepy, on top of well shoot third act/finale to close the film. Going if the studio decides to make a film going forward about the mythology of Pennywise/IT with an excellent performance by Skarsgard, can be a great movie to watch. The final moments include a Sadly in this case, IT Chapter Two loses the heart captured by the kids from Chapter One to make this long drawn out film that not only drags on but fails to miss the point of what made the first one such an incredible film and puts us into one of the biggest disappointing films of the year.
