Hobbs & Shaw Review- It's Fast, It's Furious, It's Fun

In 2001, Vin Diesel and Universal Pictures released the first film of the Fast and Furious franchise, a simple street racing film that changed the game for action films. Throughout the last 18 years we have seen the Fast Family fight drug lords, hackers, drones, and even submarines. Now they face their biggest challenge yet...a spin-off starring Dwayne Johnson! Not only is this the biggest threat they face to their family, they must live with the fact this new film starring The Rock and Jason Statham as their characters from the Fast and Furious universe is actually a good movie and great addition to the franchise. The film takes place after the events of Fate of the Furious, the 8th film of Fast Franchise, where Luke Hobbs (The Rock) and Deckard Shaw (Statham) must team up together to save the world once again. This time the world needs saving from a cyber-genetically mutated rogue MI6 agent named Brixton, played by Idris Elba, who plans to release a virus to cause mass genocide around the world. While they may be enemies normally, Hobbs and Shaw must put their differences aside, travel the world to awesome locations alongside Shaw's sister played by Vanessa Kirby, and rediscover the meaning of family along the way. The Fast and Furious movies films have always had a special meaning to me so the idea of extending it's universe with these spin-off films is exciting yet nerve wrecking due to ideas of what the franchise is like without it's centerpiece character Dominic Toretto. So naturally I was very anxious when walking into this film, despite the amazing trailers. However as a fan of cinema and the Fast and Furious universe, the film did not disappoint and even at some points exceeds the expectations. The chemistry between the two title main characters was through the roof. Their banter back and forth between one another was fun, insult after insult it made the film feel comfortable and even gave it some heart as well character development that allows both of the characters to evolve from their last entities in the franchise. Before I dive into the stunts and actions scenes of the films, I have to mention briefly how awesome of a villain Idris Elba was in this film. There were moments throughout the film where I find myself believing what he was saying to Hobbs and Shaw, which sounds crazy giving the context of his character, point being he sold his character and was exciting to watch on screen in all of his scenes, promoting him to one of the top bad guys in the Fast Universe. The surprises in this film as well, give itself memorable moments for years to come. Now the cherry on top, the stunts/fights/action sequences. Despite the facts that the laws of physics do not apply to the Fast and Furious movies, the stunts were through the roof. The CGI was done perfectly allowing all the actions to set a new bar for future installments of the franchise and future action movies. Through all the explosions, the brilliant and smooth car chases, the beautifully choreographed fights, and amazing stunts we see a new model of the world of Fast and Furious, yet the old parts that make the movies fun to watch for all of time to come. Thus making Hobbs & Shaw a welcoming addition to the family, with a bright future ahead, and a top film of the summer.
